Offense stalled in loss to No. 1 Angelo State

SAN ANGELO, Texas (May 18, 2017) - Texas Woman's University suffered a 5-0 loss to No. 1 Angelo State during game one of Super Regionals held Thursday at Mayer Field to place the Pioneers into an elimination situation with game two tomorrow at 2 p.m. followed by a third game, if necessary, at 4:30 p.m.

The Pioneers (37-21) garnered their first of three hits on the day with leadoff batter Nicole Nordie on a blooper over the head of the first baseman. Nordie stole second to place herself in scoring position, but a foul out, strike out and ground out left her stranded.

ASU (56-5) also recorded a single with their leadoff with a shot to shortstop, and a sacrifice bunt pushed her up to second. The next batter was hit by a pitch to place two runners on base. TWU threw out the next Belle at first and then attempted to put the runner out at second while another snuck home on the play to put ASU up 1-0.

In the bottom of the third, South Central Regional Player of the Year, Kenedy Urbany, launched a home run to bring in the runner from first who was hit by a pitch to give ASU a 3-0 lead.

The bottom of the fifth inning was a replay of the third as a home run again brought it a pair of scores by the batter and a runner who was hit by a pitch for a 5-0 Belle advantage.

Nordie sent a deep shot to center field near the fence in the top of the sixth that bounced off of the fielder's glove as she made her way to third. Katy Stephens was hit by a pitch before moving to second on a wild pitch, but consecutive outs sent the runners back to the dugout.

The shutout was the fourth handed to the Pioneers this season with the most recent also occurring at the hands of Angelo State during the Lone Star Conference and delivered by South Central Regional Pitcher of the Year, Brandy Marlett.

Abby Walker (19-10) took the loss with three runs on three hits.

The Pioneers and Belles continue the series tomorrow with a 2 p.m. contest and an if necessary game scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
