Puempel, Nordie lead offense in two wins over MSU

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (April 14, 2017) - Texas Woman's University revenged a loss in game one of the series to Midwestern State by besting the Mustangs, 10-8 and 14-4, on day two highlighted by a grand slam by Hazel Puempel and a pair of home runs by Nicole Nordie in game two Friday at Mustangs Park.

Texas Woman's 10, Midwestern State 8

The Mustangs earned the first run on the board in the bottom of the first with an RBI single to right field. TWU answered with three runs in the second with an RBI double up the middle by Tara Solomon to score Logan Polasek and Alexis Elizondo.

A TWU error assisted MSU in a trio of runs that allowed the Mustangs to jump ahead 4-3 in the bottom of the second. An error on the side of MSU in the third allowed  Puempel to knot the game at 4-4.

Elizondo doubled to center field in the fifth to bring in Puempel to regain the lead for the Pioneers before Morgan Harrison sent a single to the middle to score Elizondo. A double by Nordie to right center scored Solomon and Harrison to put TWU up 8-4. A two-run homer by MSU in the bottom of the frame closed the gap to 8-6.

Solomon doubled up the middle in the top of the seventh to increase the margin to 10-6. The Mustangs made a run with a single to right field to score a pair, but a fly out gave the Pioneers the victory.

Hailey Dixon (5-1) earned the win in three innings with two earned runs on one walk and one strike out.

A home run and sacrifice fly RBI handed the Mustangs an early 2-0 advantage in the first until Puempel notched a grand slam, her first home run as a Pioneer, to put TWU up 4-2. Harrison doubled to left field to score another pair for a 6-2 Pioneer lead.

A walk with the bases loaded to the Mustangs permitted one run across before Puempel added a score with a double to right field to keep the Pioneers ahead 7-3 in the fourth. Nordie registered her sixth homer of the season in the fifth for two more scores. MSU hit another home run to close to within 7-4 in the bottom of the sixth.

Nordie took ahold of her second homer of the day in the top of the second, and Tylia Sylestine grabbed her seventh blast of the season to extend the lead to 12-4. Harrison put on another two with a single to right center to conclude the game in a 14-4 Pioneer victory.
