Mabary, Hickey Lead Pioneers to Doubleheader Sweep Against MSU

DENTON, Texas (Mar. 13) – The TWU softball team captured a pair of slugfests for the doubleheader sweep and the series win against Midwestern State Monday night at Pioneer Field.  TWU won the first game 14-8 before finishing the series with an 11-9 victory.

Senior Laura Mabary went 5-for-7 with four RBI and five runs score in the doubleheader while junior Katie Hickey pitched six strong innings in the second for her second win of the season.  Senior Tealey Farquhar also batted 4-for-7 with three RBI and three runs and Katy Stephens finished 4-for-5 with four RBI.

In game one the Pioneers scored in every inning except fifth including four runs in each of the first and fourth innings.  TWU added three in second, two in third and one in the sixth.

Mabary and Stephens had three RBI each in the game while junior Hailey Dixon came in relief and pitched five innings for the win.

In the second game the Pioneers again scored in every inning except third.  Big innings came in the fifth and sixth as they scored three and four runs respectively.  With TWU leading 11-4 in the top of the seventh, the Mustangs rallied with five runs to cut their deficit to two but a double play ended the game.  With one out and a runner on third, MSU tried to score on a ground out to second but the Pioneers threw the runner out at the home plate to end the game.

Farquhar led the team with three RBI in the game while Hickey started in the circle and pitched six innings.  She struck out six batters in the game.

"We need Hickey today and she threw very well," said TWU head coach Genny Stidham.  "I am impressed.  She held Midwestern to four runs until the last inning.  Our offense came through and scored runs.  Our hitters from top to bottom produced and did their job."

With the wins TWU improved to 17-9 on the season and 6-2 in the Lone Star Conference.  The Pioneers will return to action when they travel to San Angelo, TX, to face Angelo State on Friday, Mar. 18 in a doubleheader at 5:00 p.m.
