KINGSVILLE, Texas (April 13, 2024) - The Texas Woman's softball team went 1-1 in their doubleheader with Texas A&M - Kingsville on Saturday.
TWU (20-26, 18-17) took on LSC opponent TAMUK (27-19, 20-18) at Vernie and Blanche Hubert Field, as the Pioneers secured game one of the series, 2-1 after two solo home runs by Elizabeth Smith and Lauryn Davies. The Javelinas responded with a strong outing in game two and defeated the Pioneers 7-1 to even the series 1-1, headed into game three on Sunday, April 14.
Alyssa LeBlanc (12-10) pitched a full seven innings in game one and had eight strikeouts with five hits allowed on 26 at-bats and faced 27 batters.
Jaycie Hall (4-8) was credited the loss for game two after starting in the circle for the Pioneers before Allison Gonzalez came in to finish. Gonzalez allowed eight hits on 26 batters faced and three earned runs.
In game one of the series, TAMUK had an RBI single to get things started in the third inning. TWU responded with an eruption at-bat from Smith in the top of the fifth as she scored a solo home run to tie it. Davies followed Smith's lead and homered one over the fence for the go-ahead lead.
LeBlanc secured game one with the final strikeout to come out on top, 2-1. Callie Bailey was the other Pioneer to secure a hit in the first battle other than the home runs scored by Smith and Davies.
The Javelinas flipped the script in game two and came out strong to defend home field with the 7-1 victory. TAMUK started the scoring in the first inning with three runs after TWU did not capitalize on scoring chances. The home team kept the bats going as the momentum rolled throughout the first four innings of play.
The Pioneers ended TAMUK's scoring run with an RBI single from Bailey in the sixth, but too much of a deficit to overcome in the final inning. The Javelinas took advantage of four TWU errors and outhit the Pioneers 10-5 to even the series, 1-1.
The two teams will meet again on the diamond tomorrow at 12 p.m. to finish the 3-game series.Â
