Preview: Pioneers hosting USA Gymnastics Collegiate National Championships

DENTON, Texas (April 11, 2017) – The reigning USA Gymnastics Women's Collegiate National Champion Texas Woman's University is set to host the 2018 Championships in the three-day competition that will determine team and individual champions over April 13-15 inside Kitty Magee Arena.

The second-seeded Pioneers enter the championships with a Regional Qualifying Score (RQS) of 194.730 and have posted a team-high score of 195.575, both of which are second to number-one seed Lindenwood. Individually, Schyler Jones sits second in all-around (39.040) and vault (9.825), third on beam (9.845), and fourth on floor (9.855). On vault, Brandi Lazarus is ranked fourth (9.805), and Alyssa Kelly is fifth (9.800). Mallory Moredock is second on beam (9.850), and Kelly is fourth (9.815), while Bria Northrop is in fourth on bars (9.825).

About the format
Eight teams and 37 individual qualifiers will contend for team, all-around, and event national titles. The team semifinals will be conducted in two separate sessions, taking place Friday, April 13 at 2 and 7 p.m. inside Kitty Magee Arena. The two highest-scoring teams from each preliminary group advance to the four-team finals Saturday, April 14 at 7 p.m. Friday's top-five scoring gymnasts in every event, including ties, from the first and second team session (for a total of at least 10), will qualify for the event finals. The individual event finals will be contested Sunday, April 15 beginning at 1 p.m.

SEATTLE  (April 8, 2017) - The Pioneers have done it again. Texas Woman's University secured its 10th USA Gymnastics National Championship Saturday night, the first since 2008, at host Seattle Pacific University by defeating two-time defending champion Lindenwood, along with top-seeded Bridgeport and Cornell. TWU registered a program record with a score of 196.125 as five Pioneers set or matched career-highs inside Brougham Pavilion.
The Pioneers entered the finals with the third-highest score from the Friday's semifinals, a 194.250, as Bridgeport boasted a 195.575, Lindenwood a 195.100 and Cornell a 194.200. Not only did TWU overcome being ranked as the third-seed entering Friday and Saturday's competition, the Pioneers also trailed heading into the final rotation of the evening, .075 behind Bridgeport.
 
Last year at Individual Event Finals
SEATTLE (April 9, 2017) - Seven Texas Woman's University gymnasts with a total of 12 All-American honors competed Sunday afternoon during the final day of the USAG Collegiate National Championships inside Brougham Pavilion hosted by Seattle Pacific University.
Mallory Moredock was the highest finisher for the Pioneers as she vaulted to a career-best score of 9.875 for second place, and Schyler Jones performed well with a fourth place finish after registering a 9.825. Megan Gentry was the first competitor of the day and gave a solid start with a 9.725 to earn 10th place.
Alyssa Kelly tied for sixth place on balance beam with a 9.800, while Jones tied in the 10th spot with a 9.775. Kelly earned a seventh-place finish on uneven bars with a score of 9.775, and Simpson concluded in a 13th-place tie with a 9.700. Bria Northrop did not complete her floor routine and concluded in the 18th spot.
Moredock and Northrop each received a first-time All-American nod as Pioneers. Cashmore increased her total to two, while Simpson earned a trio of honors on the day as she qualified for vault and all-around as well to end her TWU career as a four-time All-American. Gentry upped her career number to three, Kelly now has four all-time honors and Jones pushed her total to seven with her vault performance and all-around effort.
