DENTON, Texas (Jan. 29, 2017) – Texas Woman's University made it a nail biter for the first three rotations against the Iowa State Cyclones during the TWU gymnastics home opener, as both teams registered team season-highs, but the Pioneers came up 1.475 points short with a final score of 194.650 compared to 196.125 by the Cyclones.
Bria Northrop took second place in the all-around competition with career-highs on all four events and an all-around score of 39.400. The freshman totaled just .600 in deductions throughout the entire meet.
TWU started on vault and posted a team score of 48.600.
Schyler Jones tied her career record with a 9.85 and led the Pioneers on the event. Northrop and
Katie Simpson helped keep the team strong by both scoring 9.750.
The Pioneers swung their way to a team score of 48.925 on bars with Simpson leading the team with a stunning performance and scoring a 9.875. Despite a fall, the team was poised and strong to post their second-best event score of the day.
Balance beam was the best event of the day for TWU with a solid score of 49.00, only giving up one point throughout five routines. Northrop wowed the crowd with her routine to score a 9.875 with her level changes and back tuck. The Vincent sister act also scored high for the team as
Taylor Vincent posted a 9.825 and
Hunter Vincent registered a 9.800. Before the fourth rotation the Pioneers nearly knotted up the team score, trailing by only .600 points.
TWU concluded the meet on floor with a team score of 48.125, their lowest event score of the afternoon. Northrop led the team with a 9.875 and
Erin Alderman followed with a 9.825.
Jones placed first on vault with her career-tying score while Northrop tied for third. Northrop also took first on floor exercise and third on balance beam, while Simpson came in second on uneven bars and Alderman tied for third on floor exercise.
TWU heads to No. 1 Oklahoma for a quad meet on Friday, Feb. 3 and will return to Kitty Magee Arena Sunday, Feb. 5 against fellow MIC opponent Lindenwood.
