TWU gymnastics wins dual meet against Centenary

DENTON, Texas (Feb. 21) – The TWU gymnastics team captured all four team events and all four individual titles in a dual meet victory over Centenary on Saturday night at Kitty Magee Arena.  The Pioneers scored a 192.825 while Centenary finished with a 189.600.
 
TWU opened the meet on vault and totaled a 48.050 after three Pioneers posted a 9.700 or higher.  Freshman Madison Nettles captured the event title with a 9.775 while senior Stephanie Repp and freshman Brandi Lazarus scored a 9.700 each.
 
In the second rotation on bars, five Pioneers scored a 9.675 or higher led by senior Courtney Cochefski.  Cochefski won the event title with a 9.825 while senior Spencer Jones scored a 9.725 and sophomore Katie Simpson posted a 9.700.  The Pioneers finished with a 48.600 team score on bars.
 
In the third rotation on beam, TWU counted a fall and posted a 47.675.  Three gymnasts scored a 9.725 or better led by Repp with a career-high 9.875 and the event title.  Simpson also posted a career-high with a 9.775 and freshman Schyler Jones finished with a 9.725.
 
In their final rotation on floor, TWU had just five gymnasts in the line-up and all five scored a 9.500 or higher for a team score of 48.500.  Spencer Jones won the event title with a 9.850 while Schyler Jones scored a 9.775 and freshman Mallory Moredock posted a 9.725.
 
Repp and Schyler Jones both competed as all-arounders and scored a 38.750 and 38.275 to finish second and third respectively.
 
"We competed as a team and we are very pleased with our performances," said TWU head coach Lisa Bowerman.  "Coming into the meet, we talked about going big, fighting on everything and there was nothing we were going to hold back on.  Even though we made some mistakes, we met our goal of going big.  Overall we are pleased with our improvement and we can build from here for the rest of the season."
 
The Pioneers will return to action when they host a quad meet on Sunday, Mar. 1, at 1:00 p.m. TWU will welcome Brown, Maryland and Utah State to Kitty Magee Arena for the four-team competition.
