DENTON, Texas (April 16) – The Texas Woman’s University gymnastics team scored a 193.600 to finish second at the 2010 USA Gymnastics Collegiate National Championships on Friday night.

The University of Bridgeport captured its second straight title with 193.975. Cornell placed third with 192.525 and Rutgers finished fourth with 190.700

The Pioneers won the first two events with 48.775 on vault and 48.600 on bars and were in first place going into the third rotation. For the second straight season, TWU struggled in the third rotation and counted two falls on beam for a score of 47.500 to drop to second in the standings. The Pioneers 48.725 team score on floor exercise, their last event of the night, wasn’t enough as they dropped their first meet at Kitty Magee Arena this season.

"The girls put their heart and soul into it and there is no doubt that it hurts," said TWU head coach Frank Kudlac.  "If it didn’t hurt then it means they didn’t care. Unfortunately it was beam that gave us problems last year. After the first fall we tightened up a little bit."

Sophomore Marcella Fallon had the best score of the night on vault with 9.825 and freshman Brittany Johnson finished had the top mark of the competition on beam, a 9.825. Sophomore Rashonda Cannie tied for first on bars with 9.800 while freshman Kristin Edwards finished in a three-way tie on floor with 9.800. Cannie also won the all-around with 38.975.

The 2010 USAG Championships will conclude on Saturday, April 17, with the individual event finals at 5:00 p.m. Six Pioneers will compete for individual titles. Edwards, Johnson, and freshman Amy Winczura will compete on vault, Cannie and Johnson on bars, Johnson and senior Michelle Graves on beam and Edwards, Winczura, and junior Caroline Hilpisch on floor.
