DENTON, Texas (March 3) – TWU sophomore Jessica LaMonica drove in six runs to lead the Pioneers to a doubleheader sweep against Missouri Southern, 13-5 (5) and 10-2 (5) on Wednesday afternoon at Pioneer Field.

In the opening game, senior Carly Case started in the circle and pitched two innings. Freshman Kayla Williams came in relief and tossed three innings for the win. LaMonica went 2-for-2 with three RBI and three runs while junior Hayley Siebman was 3-for-3 with two RBI and three runs.

The Pioneers scored three runs in the bottom of the first including two on LaMonica’s homerun to left field. Missouri Southern answered with five run in the top of the second to take the lead. TWU regained the lead in the bottom of the inning with four runs and added four more in the third. The Pioneers closed out the game with two runs in the fifth.

In game two, junior Abby Burns started in the circle for TWU and struck out three batters for the win. LaMonica and Siebman each drove in three runs. Freshman Lizzy Kelly went 3-for-3 with three runs and one RBI to finish the day 5-for-5 with five runs scored.

“We took advantage of some pitches they threw and hit them hard,” said TWU head coach Richie Bruister. “Everything clicked on offense today. Jesse, Hayley and Lizzy had monster days and they continue to play well.”

With four wins over Missouri Southern this week (TWU also swept a doubleheader from the Lions on Tuesday) the Pioneers improved their record to 13-6 on the season. TWU will return to action on Saturday, Mar. 6, when they travel to Cameron for a doubleheader at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m.
