Pioneers rally for a 4-3 win over #16 West Texas A&M

DENTON, Texas (March 13) – Three runs in the bottom of the fifth propelled the Texas Woman’s University softball team to a 4-3 win over #16 West Texas A&M on Saturday at Pioneer Field.

Trailing by a run entering the fifth, TWU senior Billie Callahan tied the game with a RBI single and senior Arebalos put the Pioneers on top with a two-run double. Senior Carly Case pitched a complete game for her 10th win of the season.

The Lady Buffs scored the first two runs of the game in the top of the second. TWU got one back in the third when Callahan singled to left field to drive in freshman Kayla Williams from second.

In the fifth, junior Hayley Siebman led off the inning with a double to right center and scored on Callahan’s single to tie the game. Sophomore Jessica LaMonica followed with an infield single. Junior Abby Burns filed out to deep right to move the runners into scoring position before Arebalos’ two-out double.

West Texas A&M threatened in the seventh after the first two batters reached on singles. The Lady Buffs’ Kimberly LeComte flied out to right and Kasey Henderson was caught in a run down for a double play. Amber Farr scored from second during the run down to make 4-3 but Meghan Brown fouled out to right field to end the game.

“We played well on defense and got timely hits to put pressure on West Texas A&M,” said TWU head coach Richie Bruister. “Billie had a great series and Angie came up with the big hit. I'm proud of the girls for bouncng back after the doubleheader loss yesterday.”

The Pioneers improved to 16-8 on the season and 1-2 in the Lone Star Conference South Division. TWU will return to action when they take on Abilene Christian on the road on March 19-20.
