Softball falters against #16 West Texas A&M
Boxscores: Game 1, Game 2

DENTON, Texas (March 12) – The TWU softball team opened its Lone Star Conference South Division schedule with a doubleheader loss to #16 West Texas A&M. The Pioneers dropped the first game 5-2 before falling 6-2 in the nightcap.

TWU scored the first run in game one on sophomore Jessica LaMonica’s RBI single in the bottom of the first. The Lady Buffs scored five unanswered runs, two in the third and three in the fifth - to take 5-1 lead. The Pioneers added their second run in the seventh on a RBI double by senior Billie Callahan.

Senior Carly Case pitched a complete game for TWU and struck out six batters in the loss. She walked five batters and allowed five hits.

In game two, West Texas A&M scored in the top of the first inning before TWU answered with two in the bottom of the inning. Callahan and LaMonica both reached on one-out singles and came around to score on junior Abby Burns single up the middle.

The Lady Buffs scored four runs in the fifth including two unearned runs with two outs to take a 5-2 lead. West Texas A&M added its sixth run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly.

Burns pitched all seven innings and struck out three batters in the loss. Callahan finished the day with 5-for-6 while LaMonica batted 3-for-6.

The Pioneers (15-8, 0-2) will wrap-up the three-game weekend series against West Texas A&M with a home game on Saturday, Mar. 13 at Noon.
