DENTON, Texas (Feb. 7) – The TWU gymnastics team captured a quad meet win Sunday afternoon at Kitty Magee Arena with a score of 193.125 to defeat Air Force, Centenary and Northern Illinois. UNI finished second with a 192.425 while Air Force placed third with a 188.650. Centenary came in fourth with a 185.925.
The Pioneers began the day with a strong performance on vault, notching their highest team score of the season, a 48.525. Sophomore Rashonda Cannie and freshman Kristin Edwards both scored a 9.750 to tie for first on the event.
On bars, Cannie and sophomore Chaynade Knowles tallied matching TWU-best marks of 9.700. Both tied for third and the Pioneers as a team posted a 48.100.
TWU then moved to beam where they recorded a season-high 48.175. Cannie continued her outstanding day as she scored a career-high 9.800 to tie for first on the event with with fellow Pioneer Kristie Costa.
Freshman Kristin Edwards scintillating floor routine clinched the quad meet win for TWU.
The Pioneers closed out the meet on floor with a score of 48.325. Edwards captured the FX title with a career-high score of 9.850. Cannie finished third on the event with 9.775 to claim the afternoon's all-around title with a career-high 39.025.
“This was an extremely competitive meet especially between us and Northern Illinois," said TWU head coach Frank Kudlac. "It down to our last performer on the floor and fortunately Kristin Edwards came up big with a career-best. We are working on little things every day in practice and it helped us post over 48.000 in all four events.”
The Pioneers will return to action next Friday, Feb. 12 when they take on LSU at 7:00 p.m. in Baton Rouge, LA.
