SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Feb. 6) – The TWU softball team remained perfect on the season with two more wins at the St. Mary’s NCAA Division II College Classic in San Antonio. The Pioneers defeated St. Edward’s 4-3 and followed that with a 4-0 win over Texas A&M International.

“This is a big turnaround for our program,” said TWU head coach Richie Bruister. “Hard work and dedication in the preseason is paying off and we are off to a good start. I am very proud of the girls.”

Against St. Edward’s, junior Abby Burns started in the circle and tossed 6.2 scoreless inning before allowing three runs. Senior Carly Case got the final out for the save. Burns also drove in three of the four TWU runs. Senior Billie Callahan and junior Haley Siebman scored two runs each.

TWU’s pitching dominance continued against Texas A&M International. Case pitched a complete game shutout to pick up her third win of the season. She allowed just one hit and stuckout 10 batters.

Both teams struggled on offense for the first five innings. The Pioneers broke the 0-0 tie with all four runs in the sixth on five singles.

“Our pitching and defense set the tone this tournament,” Bruister said. “Abby, Caryl, and Kayla yesterday were outstanding. This is tough tournament with some good teams in the region. To go 4-0 shows that we will be good this season.”

The Pioneers (5-0) will return to action when they take on University of Texas Longhorns in their season opener on Thursday, Feb. 11 in Austin, TX. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. in Red & Charline McCombs Field.
