SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Feb. 5) – TWU softball team went 2-0 on the opening day at the St. Mary’s NCAA Division II College Classic on Friday. The Pioneers defeated UT-Permian Basin, 8-1, and then edged Incarnate Word, 2-1.

Senior pitcher Carly Case tossed six strong innings against UTPB and allowed just one earned run on three hits while striking out seven. Senior Angie Arebalos went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs. Senior Billie Callahan and junior Haley Siebman also scored two runs each.

“Carly pitched her typical game and kept them off balance,” said TWU head coach Richie Bruister. “For the second straight game we played good defense, pitched well and got timely hits.”

Junior Abby Burns drove in both TWU runs against Incarnate Word and came in relief to get the final out for the save. Freshman Kayla Williams started in the circle and pitched 6.2 innings for the win. She allowed four hits and one earned run while striking out four.

“This game was a pitcher’s dual by two freshmen,” Bruister said. “We fell behind early but made some adjustments at plate and Abby got the big hit.”

The Pioneers will play two more game tomorrow. TWU will face St. Edward’s at 9:00 a.m. before facing Texas A&M International at 11:00 a.m.
