Basketball loses heartbreaker in double overtime to Central Oklahoma

DENTON, Texas (Feb. 3) – The Texas Woman’s University basketball team dropped a heartbreaker in double overtime to visiting Central Oklahoma, 96-93. Sophomore Jessica Hanna and junior Kayla Weaver both reached career-highs in points.

Neither team led by more than four points in the first 15 minutes of the opening half. TWU led 37-32 at 4:21 before the Bronchos went on an 11-0 run to close out the half and take a 43-37 lead at the half.

UCO built an eight-point lead early in the second half but the Pioneers answered to take a 63-62 lead at 8:27 mark. TWU pushed the lead to six but the Bronchos scored six straight points to tie the game. After three more ties the Pioneers took a three-point lead with 0.7 left in regulation. UCO’s Savannah Hamilton tied the game with buzzer beater to send it into first overtime.

Both teams traded baskets early until Central Oklahoma went up by four, 89-85, with 1:18 to go in the overtime. TWU scored four straight on two free-throws and a jumper in the paint by junior Tiandrea Dixon with four second to go to tie the game and send it into second overtime.

Free throws made the difference in the second extra period as the Bronchos outscored TWU, 5-2, from the line.

“We had the opportunity to put the game away but did not capitalize,” said TWU head coach Beth Jillson. “Good thing is that we play them again in three days. We need to bounce back, regroup and win on the road.”

Hanna led the game with 31 points while Weaver added 27 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Megan Hashman chipped in 15 points.

The Pioneers will face the same Central Oklahoma team in three days on Saturday, Feb. 6 in Edmond, OK. The game is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
