DENTON, Texas (Feb. 24) –The TWU basketball team rallied from a 19-point first half deficit to defeat visiting Southeastern Oklahoma, 65-63, on senior day at Kitty Magee Arena.
The Pioneers took an early 16-7 lead before Southeastern went on a 17-0 run to go up 24-16 at 8:50 mark in the first half. The Savage Storm pushed the lead to 19 points with 1:13 to go in the half and took a 43-26 halftime lead.
TWU started the second half on 11-4 run to cut the deficit to 10 points. SOSU answered and pushed the lead back up to 17 points with 10 minutes to go in the game.
The Pioneers chipped away and senior Megan Hashman made a lay-up to cut the deficit to two points and was fouled with 37 seconds left. Hashman made the free-throw to make it a one-point game. TWU forced a turnover on the next Southeastern Oklahoma’s position and Hashman again made a lay-up to put the Pioneers up by one. The Savage Storm missed two jumpers before senior Jessica Durr hit one of two free-throws to seal the game.
“This is the best senior day for Keshia, Hash and I,” said Durr. “We struggled in the first half but never gave up. The entire team stepped up in the second half and didn’t want lose this game on senior day.”
Hashman and sophomore Jessica Hanna led the game with 17 points each. Durr recorded a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds. Juniors Kayla Weaver added nine points and Tiandrea Dixon chipped in eight points.
After shooting 31.0 percent in the first half, the Pioneers shot 43.8 percent in the second half. The Savage Storm shot 53.1 percent in the first 20 minutes before shooting just 27.3 percent in the second half.
The Pioneers will close out the regular season on the road at East Central on Saturday, Feb. 27 at 2:00 p.m. TWU will advance to the Lone Star Conference Tournament next week in Bartlesville, OK.
With a win at ECU and a loss by Southeastern Oklahoma against Central Oklahoma, the Pioneers can secure the third-seed in the North Division.
