TWU basketball drops first conference game at Northeastern State

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. (Jan. 26) – The Pioneers led by eight points at the half, but could not hold on to the lead as they fell on the road to Northeastern State, 75-67. TWU dropped to 10-7 overall and 4-1 in LSC North while the RiverHawks improved to 16-4 overall and 5-0 in the conference.

Senior Megan Hashman led three Pioneers in double figures with a game and career-high 26 points. Junior Kayla Weaver also added a career-high 19 points and sophomore Jessica Hanna chipped in 11 points.

TWU shot 61.5 percent in the first half and led 41-33 at the break. Hashman scored 22 of her 26 points in the first half hitting 8 of 9 shots from the field and 6 of 7 free-throws.

The RiverHawks came out in the second half and outscored TWU, 10-3, to take an one-point lead at 17:42 mark. NSU built the lead to eight points before the Pioneers cut the deficit to three with 7:35 to go in the game. The RiverHawks answered and took the game’s biggest lead (11) at 3:56 and held on for an eight-point victory.

TWU finished the with 48.0 percent shooting while Northeastern State shot 58.5 percent including 68.0 percent in the second half.

“Both teams shot well in the first half and we had a few stops at the end to take an eight point lead,” said TWU head coach Beth Jillson. “Northeastern came out in the second half and scored lot of transition points. We had the chance but this is a tough place to win.”

The Pioneers will return to action this Saturday, Jan. 30 when they host Texas A&M-Commerce at 2:00 p.m. in Kitty Magee Arena.

The Pioneers will host TWU Basketball Alumni Reunion on Saturday highlighted by a celebration of the 20th anniversary of the 1989-90 Pioneer team. TWU basketball players and coaches will also conduct a free postgame youth clinic.
