KINGSVILLE, Texas (Sept. 19) – The Pioneers defeated host Texas A&M-Kingsville in four sets, 25-18, 25-21, 15-25, and 25-14, on Saturday afternoon at the Steinke Center. TWU sophomore Katelyn Osborne led all players in the game with a career-high 16 kills.
TWU started the game with strong defense and held the Javelinas under .100 hitting in the first two sets to take a 2-0 lead. After a 10-minute intermission Texas A&M-Kingsville came out on fire to win the third set and make it a 2-1 game. The Pioneers bounced back and hit .293 in the fourth set to seal the victory.
Osborne posted 16 kills on 20 attempts with just one error. She also added a game-high six block assists. For TWU, junior Alyson Harlan also reached double-digits in kills with 12 and senior Danielle Pegues and sophomore Hayley Summers each had eight kills. Additionally, Summers chipped in with a career-high 18 digs. The Pioneers as a team posted 12 team blocks and eight service aces.
“We played a great match from start to finish,” said head coach Shelly Barberee. “We needed this win especially on the road. Our serve receive broke down a little bit in the third set but we bounced back and passed well in the fourth set. Overall we looked solid.”
With the win, the Pioneers evened their overall record and conference record at 8-8 and 1-1 respectively. TWU makes its Lone Star Conference home debut on Thursday, September 24, against Eastern New Mexico at 7:00 p.m. in Kitty Magee Arena.
