DENTON, Texas (Sept. 17) – The TWU volleyball team fell in five sets, 25-22, 18-25, 25-22, 17-25, and 15-13, to host Tarleton State in the Lone Star Conference opener for both teams. Three Pioneers recorded double-double in the loss.
TWU controlled the first set and led from start to finish to take a 1-0 lead. The TexAnns answered with a .400 hitting percentage in the second set and tied the game at one. In set three, both teams traded points before the Pioneers scored four straight points to take a 17-13 lead. Tarleton State had a late run but TWU held on for a 25-22 win to take a 2-1 lead in the game. The TexAnns once again answered in set four to even the game at two. The Pioneers took an early 7-3 lead in the final set but TSU rallied to capture the win, 15-13.
Junior Alyson Harlan led the Pioneers with 13 kills and added 17 digs. Senior Danielle Pegues also reached double digits in kills with 10. Junior LyGene’ Traylor, Dani Veitenheimer and Launa McClung all added eight kills each. Seniors Jessica Crow and Heather Maddox both recorded double-doubles. Crow posted 23 assists and 22 digs while Maddox finished with 26 assists and 11 digs. Junior Kendra Coulson had 22 digs.
“We played our best game this season and it’s unfortunate that we lost ,” said head coach Shelly Barberee. “It was an exciting game in front of a big crowd. I am upset we lost the game but our girls played hard.”
The Pioneers (7-8, 0-1) will continue their road trip and head to Kingsville, TX to take on Texas A&M-Kingsville on Saturday, September 19, at 2:00 p.m.
