TWU started the day strong against TAMIU and jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the first set. But the Dustdevils rallied to win the set. The Pioneers bounced back and won the next three sets to win their fourth consecutive game this week. Freshman Amanda Hall led the way with a team-high 12 kills and added nine digs. Sophomore Katelyn Osborne also reached double digits in kills with 10. Senior Danielle Pegues and juniors Launa McClung and Dani Veitenheimer all added eight kills each. Senior Heather Maddox posted a career-high 24 assists.
After splitting the first two sets against Incarnate Word, the Pioneers struggled in the third and fourth sets dropping the game 3-1. Hall once again led the team with 11 kills and added 12 digs to record her first career double-double. Maddox also recorded a double-double with 11 assists and 13 digs.
“We played hard in both games today and I am pleased with the 3-1 record in this tournament,” said head coach Shelly Barberee. “Amanda had an outstanding day. She was one dig away from recording two double-doubles today. Overall I am pleased with four wins in five games this week.”
Junior Kendra Coulson finished the tournament with 66 digs in four games and was selected to the all-tournament team. This is the second all-tournament selection for Coulson this season. She was also selected at the Marriott Volleyball Invitational hosted by University of Colorado-Colorado Springs.
The Pioneers (7-7) will travel back to Stephenville, TX to open their Lone Star Conference action against Tarleton State on Thursday, Sept. 17 at 7:00 p.m.
“We improved a lot since we started the season in Colorado. I am pretty confident we are ready for the conference schedule,” said Barberee.
