SAN ANTONIO, Texas (February 5) – The Texas Woman’s University Pioneers and the Texas A&M-International DustDevils broke out the bats on Thursday evening as they combined for 34 runs and 41 hits in a softball doubleheader played at Rattler Field on the campus of St. Mary’s University.
When the offensive fireworks were over, both teams walked away with a win as TAMI claimed game one by a 13-7 score and TWU took game two by a 9-5 final.
Two homeruns in the bottom of the second inning – a grand slam by sophomore designated player Ryanne Chapman and a three-run shot by sophomore outfielder Samantha Garcia - carried the DustDevils to victory in the first game of the day. Three players – freshman catcher Amy Menge, junior pinch hitter Lyndsey Lipscomb, and sophomore second baseman
Hayley Siebman – had multiple hits in the loss for TWU. Menge went 3-4 with a run batted in, Lipscomb was 2-2 with three runs batted in, and Siebman was 2-3 with two runs scored. Junior outfielder
Angie Arebalos also hit her first homerun of the year for the Pioneers, a solo shot in the top of the first inning.
In the nightcap, it was the Pioneers who benefited from the longball. Freshman third baseman Megan Warren and Arebalos both homered in the top of the fourth inning to help TWU turn a two-run deficit into an 8-2 advantage. Warren’s shot was a three-run bomb while Arebalos struck for a two-run blast. Warren added another hit in the game while Arebalos recorded two more base knocks. Lipscomb, Siebman, and designated player
Kayla Behrle also chipped in with two hits apiece. Junior pitcher
Carly Case worked the full seven innings in the circle for TWU. Case allowed eight hits and five runs but struck out nine DustDevils to pick up her second win of the season.
The first game between TWU (3-1) and TAMI (1-3) was part of the 2009 St. Mary’s Division II College Classic. The Pioneers will stay in San Antonio this weekend and play four more games (two on Friday, two on Saturday) in the 15-team tournament to be held at the San Antonio ISD Spring Sports Complex.
