CANYON, Texas (Nov. 12) – The sixth-seeded Texas Woman’s University volleyball team dropped a five-set thriller to third-seeded Angelo State, 12-25, 25-15, 18-25, 25-21, and 10-15, in the first round of the 2009 Lone Star Conference Tournament.
The Pioneers started the game slow as they fell behind early in set one, 5-1. Angelo State posted a .281 hitting percentage and committed just four errors to capture the opening set, 25-12. TWU recorded just five kills on 30 attempts in the set.
The Pioneers regrouped in the second set and scored 10 of the first 13 points to take a seven-point lead. The Rambelles answered with an 8-4 run to cut the deficit to three points, 14-11. The Pioneers responded to build their lead back up to seven points, 21-14, and hold on for a 10-point victory. TWU committed just one error in the second set and posted a .400 hitting percentage with 11 kills on 25 attacks.
The two teams traded the first 21 points in set three. Leading by one point, Angelo State scored six straight points to secure an 18-11 lead. The Pioneers rallied to cut their deficit to four points, 22-18, but ASU scored the final three points to take a 25-18 win in the set and a 2-1 lead in the game.
In set four it was all Pioneers as they controlled the set from start to finish to even the game at two sets apiece and force a fifth and deciding set. TWU built a seven-point lead, 17-10, and never looked back as they won the set, 25-21.
Neither team took a larger lead than one-point for the first twenty points in the decisive set. With the scored tied at 10-10, the Rambelles scored the final five points to capture the set, 15-10.
“We were little rusty in the first set but we bounced back and played together,” said senior setter
Jessica Crow. “It was a great game. We just couldn’t pull it off at the end. I am going to miss this team and coaches.”
Sophomore
Katelyn Osborne led the Pioneers with 11 kills and four block assists. Senior
Danielle Pegues also reached double-digits in kills with 10. Crow contributed 39 assists while junior
Kendra Coulson added a TWU team-high 20 digs.
“Angelo State improved a lot since we played them in the regular season,” said head coach Shelley Barberee. “Everyone played well. I am upset we lost the game but I am more upset that we are losing three great players.”
The game marks the end of the Pioneer volleyball career for Crow, Pegues, and
Heather Maddox.
The Pioneers will end their season with a 16-17 overall record.
