DENTON, Texas (Oct. 22) – The Texas Woman’s University volleyball team swept visiting Southwestern Oklahoma, 3-0, (25-16, 27-25, and 25-18), Thursday night in Kitty Magee Arena. The win improves the Pioneers to 14-13 overall and 4-4 in the Lone Star Conference.

Juniors Alyson Harlan and LyGene' Traylor each had a game-high 13 kills. Harlan also led the game with 17 digs. Junior Launa McClung added seven kills while Junior Sydney Veitenheimer had a team-high 21 assists.

The Pioneers started the game with five straight points in set one and never looked back. TWU posted a .457 hitting percentage with 18 kills on 35 attacks and just two errors in the set.

The Pioneers carried the momentum into the second set and took an early 9-2 lead. The Bulldogs regrouped and rallied to tie the set at 17-17. After both team traded points, Southwestern Oklahoma took a one point lead 24-23 to force a timeout by the Pioneers. TWU erased the set point on Harlan’s kill and captured the set, 27-25, to take a 2-0 lead in the game.

After nine ties and six lead changes in the third set, TWU used an 8-3 spurt to take a 20-15 lead. The Bulldogs cut the deficit to three points, 21-18, but a kill by freshman Amanda Hall and three SWOSU’s attack errors sealed the victory for the Pioneers.

“Alyson and LyGene played a great game,” said head coach Shelly Barberee. “I was very happy to see the team fight back in the second set. It was good team effort. Sydney also had a good game at the setter position.”

TWU will host Central Oklahoma on Saturday, Oct. 24 at 2:00 p.m. in Kitty Magee Arena. The Pioneer players and coaches will conduct a free youth volleyball clinic immediately following their game.
